When the two get into an argument at the campground outside of Trafalgar, British Columbia, where the family is camping, Jamie is ordered by his mother to go into timeout. He stuffs his blanket in his sleeping bag and sneaks out of the tent to have his own private adventure. The adventure becomes scary for Jamie and his parents are terrified when they discover Jamie is missing. The police are called and Adam Tocek of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is summoned to report to the campground with his dog Norman to lead the search.

Having never read a Vicki Delany I took a leap of faith and plunged into book five of the Molly Smith series. I do not know what I have missed in the previous books, but this one left me with a rather flat feel. After the first two chapters, the book leveled out on a monotonous journey to a rather predictable ending and the lead characters resembled more of a flat Stanley than the multi-dimensional feel that persons of their positions and responsibilities should.
What began as a search for a litt Having never read a Vicki Delany I took a leap of faith and plunged into book five of the Molly Smith series. What began as a search for a little boy who wandered away from his families camp in British Columbia, turned into a case of who-done-it when the body of missing Brian Novack shows up after having been missing from his home for fifteen years. You would think that the family would rejoice in the finding, but only one of them is, which tells the reader right off that maybe the family has not been quite as forthcoming with information in the past that they should have.
However, that really does not matter, they are a mess and now it is up to Sergeant John Winters of the Trafalgar City Police to sort out what really happened and which person in this town is to blame for the death. There are multiple sub- story lines going on here and at times, I wondered if Ms Delany was just throwing anything she could at the wall to see what would stick.
Will I continue with the series, no, did I miss anything by not reading the first four books? I cannot see that I would have. Dec 31, Kathleen Hagen added it Shelves: audio-books.

They also find some bones they suspect to be human, and a new case emerges. With the find, Nicky return to Trafalgar from her life in Vancouver. She's left home at sixteen and lived a hard life since then. Nicky's brother Kyle became an angry reclusive young artist, and her mom withdrew into a shell, seldom leaving the house.

Molly's mother also seems to be exploring a new relationship, and Molly isn't sure how to feel about it. Police in the small Canadian town of Trafalgar find old bones in the woods, and open an old investigation. For me, this book represents the danger of choosing an audiobook based on a two-line summary in the online catalog. I was expecting small-town Canada and an interesting cold case. I was not expecting descriptive prostitution, drugs, child pornography, violence, etc.

A nice solid story well told and well narrated. Would you consider the audio edition of Among the Departed to be better than the print version? What other book might you compare Among the Departed to and why? I was not overly impressed with her narration of this story, I've heard better but it wasn't all monotone, and I've heard worse.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be? Any additional comments? So far I have really enjoyed each book I have listened to in this series. I love Molly and how she is growing and developing in each book. I can't wait to see what happens next.
